CALUMET, MI— Copper Island Academy has broken ground on a new high school.
The charter school in Calumet opened in 2021 with elementary and middle school facilities and a gym. On Wednesday, the academy broke ground on a high school, which is expected to open in the 2026-2027 school year. 11th-graders will be accepted next fall and 12th-graders the following year.
The 19,000-square-foot facility will cost about $6.5 million.
The academy uses several key tenets of the Finnish education model. They include individualized learning, outdoor instruction, and a focus on creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork.
