HOUGHTON, MI— Houghton Elementary School has been recognized by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy for being green.
The school achieved the highest level in the Michigan Green Schools certification process—which is an Evergreen School.
To earn certification, a school must document the completion of at least 10 approved environmental activities throughout the school year. Houghton Elementary does 20 or more. They include paper, battery, and electronic waste recycling, the composting of food scraps at local farms, and the use of high-efficiency heating, LED lights, and filtered bottle refill stations.
Students also learn about nature by raising butterflies, keeping a bee hive, and building pollinator habitats.
