Michigan House Democrats hope for more seats in election

LANSING, MI (AP)--

A balance of power in Lansing that's decidedly tilted in favor of Republicans isn't stopping Democrats from trying to shift it toward them in next week's election.

All 110 seats are up for grabs in the state House in Tuesday's election. Republicans expect to maintain their edge, while Democrats seek to gain ground and possibly retake control of the chamber they lost in 2010 election.

The GOP has a 64-46 edge going into the election. Democrats would need a net gain of 10 seats to take the majority.

Observers with ties to both parties say it would be a challenge for Democrats to win control of the House. But the shifting nature of power in recent years suggests anything is possible.
