Democrat to challenge Benishek in next election

WLUC-TV

WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP)--   A retired sheriff and former military officer is planning to run for a Northern Michigan congressional seat that was one of the country's most hotly contested campaigns in 2012.

Democrat Jerry Cannon on Tuesday announced his campaign for the 1st District seat held by second-term Republican Representative Dan Benishek.

Cannon says he's frustrated with Washington and says Benishek isn't creating jobs or working for the middle class.

Benishek is a surgeon from Crystal Falls who won an open seat in 2010 and defended it in a rematch last year.

Cannon is a Vietnam veteran who later joined the Michigan Army National Guard, serving from 1977 to 2012. He also was sheriff in Kalkaska County.

Cannon lives in Fife Lake with his wife. They have four children.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
