MI Senate votes for primary date

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The Republican-led Michigan Senate has voted to schedule a presidential primary for March 2016.

Legislation approved unanimously Thursday would set a March 15 election. It's scheduled for February under current law but must be changed for Michigan Republicans to avoid running afoul of national rules again like they did in 2012.

The bills next will be considered by the Republican-controlled House.

Under rules approved by the Michigan Republican Party, a Republican candidate who wins more than half the statewide vote in the primary would win all of roughly 60 delegates. Otherwise, three delegates would go to the winner in each of 14 congressional districts.

The remaining delegates generally would be split proportionally to match the statewide vote.

Democrats haven't decided whether to participate in a primary or instead hold caucuses.
