Staff report: Five gubernatorial candidates lacking signatures

LANSING, MI (MPRN)— Michigan Bureau of Elections staff are recommending that half of the Republican candidates for governor be kept off of the fall primary ballot.

The reports say the use of fraudulent-petition circulators and errors mean five candidates didn’t meet the signature threshold to qualify for the primary ballot.

Affected campaigns include James Craig, Perry Johnson, Michael J. Markey, Jr, Michael Brown, and Donna Brandenburg.

Brown and Brandenburg hadn’t seen the reports yet when they were reached by Michigan Public Radio. The others did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The reports say there’s no reason to believe the campaigns were aware of the alleged signature fraud.

The next step is for the Board of State Canvassers to meet later this week. That’s when they’ll decide whether to deny the candidates ballot certification.
