HOUGHTON, MI— One of the issues Houghton County residents will consider on Tuesday’s ballot is a bond proposal for the Houghton County Jail.
Officials want to borrow up to $32 million to construct a new jail. The current 28-bed facility is 62 years old and its infrastructure is severely lacking.
The bond—which translates to 1.6 mills per year over 30 years—would also allow the county to provide services like mental health counseling and juvenile protection.
Officials say something needs to be done now before the state steps in and shuts down the facility.
Polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday and close at 8 p.m. local time.
