MUNISING, MI— Voters will consider a sinking fund millage for Munising Public Schools on Tuesday’s ballot.
The district is asking for 1.5 mills over five years, or just under $400,000 a year. Superintendent Mike Travis says that amounts to 30 cents a day for homes with a taxable value of $75,000.
He says if the proposal passes, the money would be used to improve safety and health at Mather Elementary School.
“We have no functioning air handler system in that building. Our boilers are 33 years old and on their last legs, and most of our windows don’t open or close. So, the large part will be to keep our kids warm, safe, dry, and healthy.”
Travis says the foundation allowance received from the state—if managed well—allows districts to cover payroll and operational expenditures, but it doesn’t provide money for critical infrastructure. He says most districts have to pass a bond or sinking fund to cover those needs.
