MBSC says Cambensy should be on the November ballot as an Independent

Sara Cambensy

LANSING, MI— Sara Cambensy will appear as an Independent candidate for the 38th District state Senate seat on the November ballot.

The Michigan Board of State Canvassers met Monday to review a challenge to Cambensy’s petition signatures filed by Linda Donckers of Marquette in July.

The board considered an allegation that three of the petition sheets were incorrectly signed by Cambensy as the circulator, when it was actually a friend of hers that circulated them while she stood a few feet away. Three people provided affidavits supporting the allegation. Donckers’ lawyer argued that should disqualify Cambensy from the ballot due to “falsification of documents.”

Cambensy testified she had a long conversation with one of the affidavit signers, and that the other two emailed her to say they were asked to sign them after drinks.

The board’s vice chair said standards should hold circulators accountable, but she didn’t find enough evidence to completely disqualify Cambensy.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
