SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan is experiencing a fuel shortage due to the closure of the Mackinac Bridge on Tuesday.
Officials closed the bridge because of falling ice. It reopened just after 7 p.m., but regular fuel deliveries to the Sault area were interrupted. The Michigan State Police says that resulted in limited fuel supplies at some stations and no gas whatsoever at others.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has lifted trucking restrictions to expedite getting fuel and other supplies to affected areas.
“Michigan State Police personnel are working closely with local authorities and fuel providers to expedite deliveries and restore normal fuel services as quickly as possible,” said MSP Eighth District Public Information Officer, Lt. Ben Eckola.
“We understand the inconvenience this situation may cause, but we want to assure residents that this is a short-term issue. Contingency plans are in place to ensure that law enforcement and other emergency services maintain normal operation.”
