Free Fishing Weekend starts Saturday

MARQUETTE, MI--   The state is offering everyone the opportunity to fish for free this weekend.  Saturday and Sunday Michigan residents and non-residents can fish without a license, although all other fishing regulations apply.

Summer Free Fishing Weekend aims to promote the sport in Michigan.  And while many will head out to lakes and streams on their own, the Ottawa National Forest in Ontonagon County is hosting a kid’s fishing derby.  On Saturday, kids who go to the Ontonagon marina with their poles and tackle boxes will get a prize for participating.  There will also be contests, drawings, and demonstrations throughout the day.  Entrance to the park and all events are free.

Fishing activities are also scheduled in other locations throughout the state, including Crystal Falls, Escanaba, Iron River, L’Anse, Lake Linden, Marenisco, Negaunee, and Paradise.

For more information, go to www.michigan.gov/freefishing.
