Week aims to stop spread of invasives

LANSING, MI (AP)--   State officials are urging residents to be mindful of what doesn’t belong in Michigan waters.

Governor Rick Snyder has proclaimed June 9 through the 17 Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Week, and the Department of Environmental Quality has some tips on preventing the spread of non-native species.

Officials say anglers should inspect all bait and dispose of unused bait in the trash.  All watercraft and recreational equipment should be inspected before leaving the boat launch area; any vegetation or mud should be removed; and all live wells or spaces that may contain water should be cleaned and drained.

Last week 12 felony charges were authorized against an Arkansas man found selling live Asian carp around the state.  David Shane Costner of Harrisburg is accused of possessing 110 grass carp.  He allegedly sold two of the carp to undercover DNR investigators in Midland.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
