CR 595 meeting set for Tuesday night

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Environmental Protection Agency is holding a public meeting Tuesday on proposed County Road 595 in Marquette County.

The 21-mile-long north-south route would connect US-41 to County Road AAA through Champion, Ely, Humboldt, and Michigamme Townships.

Mining company Rio Tinto hopes to use the road as a connection from its sulfide mine on the Yellow Dog Plains to a processing facility in Humboldt.

The EPA has raised concerns as to whether there are alternate routes that would have less impact on aquatic resources.

An informational session takes place at 6 p.m. and public comment begins at 7 at NMU’s University Center.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
