Mixed response at CR 595 hearing

MARQUETTE, MI--   Comment was mixed during a public hearing on proposed County Road 595 Tuesday night at Northern Michigan University.

The Environmental Protection Agency held the meeting to get feedback on the road, which would connect US-41 to County Road AAA through Champion, Ely, Humboldt, and Michigamme Townships.

Residents in favor of the road say it will help Marquette County’s economy by providing a better route between the Rio Tinto Eagle mine and a processing facility in Humboldt.  Opponents say its construction would impact too much wetland acreage.

The EPA says it will either approve building the road, deny it, or modify the plan.

Written comments will be accepted until September 4.  They can be sent to:

Melanie Haveman, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (WW-16J), 77 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL, 60604-3590.
