PORTAGE TOWNSHIP, MI-- Houghton County has received a grant to create a community forest in Portage Township.
The U.S. Forest Service money will go to the Keweenaw Land Trust to conserve 320 acres in the Pilgrim River Watershed and provide permanent public access for recreational use.
The grant is part of the Community Forest and Open Space Conservation Program. It gives grants to local governments, tribes, and nonprofits working to establish community forests, and focuses on economic and environmental benefits, education, forest stewardship, and recreation.
The Keweenaw Trails Alliance has already constructed a recreational trail on the Pilgrim River property.
