DEQ denies permit for County Road 595

LANSING, MI--   The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is saying no to a permit for County Road 595.

The proposed route would connect Rio Tinto’s Eagle mine on the Yellow Dog Plains to a processing facility in Humboldt.

Last month, the Environmental Protection Agency withdrew its objection to the Marquette County Road Commission’s alternative route assessment for the project.  But the EPA said the plan didn’t comply with the Clean Water Act and would still have significant impact on wetlands, streams, and wildlife.

Thursday the DEQ notified the EPA it will not issue a permit for the project.

Permitting authority now transfers to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
