HOUGHTON COUNTY, MI-- A conservancy in the western Upper Peninsula wants to establish a nature area in a section of Houghton County known as the Hungarian Gorge.
The Keweenaw Land Trust is trying to raise $40,000 this month to cover up-front costs of buying a 10-acre parcel. It includes a waterfall, a historic dam, a small pond and hiking trails that have been open to the public for years. The trails link up with others on state land.
The Torch Lake Area Fire Protection Authority is selling the parcel because it no longer needs the pond to provide water for its trucks and repairing the dam is expensive.
Land trust director Evan McDonald says many in the community fear losing access to the property if another buyer gets it.
