ISHPEMING, MI-- Upper Peninsula Power Company is warning residents about thin ice on the Boney Falls Reservoir on the Escanaba River.
Officials say fluctuating water levels could create areas of open water. Low levels can produce “ice-bridging”, or gaps under the ice. And increased water flows can deteriorate the ice from underneath, causing it to be unstable and unsafe.
UPPCO says such areas may not be easy to identify, so snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, hikers and others need to be extremely careful.
