Environmental groups want more information on Straits oil pipeline

TRAVERSE CITY, MI (AP)--   A coalition of environmental groups is asking Michigan officials to push harder for action to prevent a spill from an oil pipeline beneath the Straits of Mackinac.

More than a dozen organizations have signed a letter to Governor Rick Snyder saying Enbridge Energy Partners LP should provide more information about the line, which carries about 23 million gallons daily. The section beneath the straits is divided into two segments.

Enbridge says the pipes are safe and haven't leaked since they were laid in 1953.

The environmental groups say the Calgary, Alberta-based company should provide more information about the line's contents and operations.

An Enbridge official said Tuesday the company has addressed most of the groups' concerns in a recent response to questions from state officials about the pipeline's condition.
