Eagle mine offering tours

MICHIGAMME TOWNSHIP, MI (AP)--   A Marquette County mine is offering free tours as it prepares to begin operation.

Lundin's Eagle Mine aims to remove about 360 million pounds of nickel and 295 million pounds of copper from the ore.

The mine is already busy with trucks and semi tractor-trailers hauling rock as it gears up to start operation in about two months. Two multimillion-dollar Swedish machines about 1,000 feet below ground drill holes that will be used to blast the ore.

The mine offers weekly surface-only tours on Fridays through mid-October. Visitors are bussed to the Michigamme Township mine from Marquette.

A mine spokesman says about 400 people go on tours each year.
