Officials try to combat erosion at Marquette park

MARQUETTE, MI (AP)--   Marquette officials are looking for ways to limit erosion around Presque Isle Park.

Park committee members are concerned about decreasing vegetation and soil cover around the Island.  The committee is especially worried about the Black Rocks section of the park where frequent foot traffic contributes to erosion.  Visitors often jump into the lake after climbing a small cliff at Black Rocks.

Presque Isle Park Advisory Committee chair Bob Chapman says the city might add large rocks in the eroded area, which would deter visitors from using a damaging path up the cliff.  A sign would point out a more environmentally friendly route.

Chapman says the city could add the sign and rock barrier at the end of the summer or after the next snowmelt.
