Stream cleanup grants available

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The deadline is approaching to apply for small grants supporting local efforts to clean Michigan rivers, streams and creeks.

Applicants have until January 26th to submit grant requests.

The state Department of Environmental Quality and Great Lakes Commission say $25,000 in grant money is available. A 25-percent minimum local match is required.

Michigan's Volunteer River, Stream, and Creek Cleanup Program supports grants to units of government to help clean waterways. Governmental units may partner with nonprofit organizations or other volunteer groups to carry out the work.

Cleanup includes removing trash and other debris from streams and stream banks.

The program is funded by fees from the sale of Michigan's specialty water quality protection license plates.
