DEQ awards grants to protect Great Lakes shorelines

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has awarded more than $700,000 in grants for shoreline projects across Michigan. 

The federal funds come from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to provide technical and financial assistance to local governments for creative projects.

In the Upper Peninsula, the city of Sault Ste. Marie has received $30,000 from the DEQ, while Eastern U.P. Regional Planning and Development has been given $18,500.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
