LANSING, MI (AP)-- Sporting clubs and other interested groups have until March 1 to apply for state funding to improve deer habitat in the Upper Peninsula.
The Deer Habitat Improvement Partnership Initiative is in its eighth year. It's paid for with hunting license revenues.
The Department of Natural Resources says $100,000 will be distributed in grants of up to $15,000 each.
Conservation districts, land conservancies and some private landowners are eligible to apply.
Previous projects funded under the initiative include planting of red oak, conifers and wildlife orchards; rehabilitation of historic wildlife openings; and native prairie restoration.
DNR field operations manager Bill Scullon says recent bitter winters have taken a toll on U.P. deer, making it all the more important to improve their habitat.
