Public comment open on Enbridge Line 5 plan

LANSING, MI--   The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is seeking comment on an Enbridge Energy plan to add supports to its pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac.

The 65-year-old Line 5 transports oil and liquid natural gas between the Lower and Upper Peninsulas.  When it was constructed the company’s engineers said the pipes could safely run up to 140 feet between anchor supports, but Enbridge’s easement agreement with the state requires supports at least every 75 feet.

Enbridge has applied for a permit to install the additional supports.  The public has until August 28 to comment on the application.

The public notice can be seen at midwaters.deq.state.mi.us/.  Under Public Notice Search enter “Enbridge” in the Applicant Name section.
