Cleanup continues at Emily Lake campground

HOUGHTON COUNTY, MI--   The Department of Natural Resources says Emily Lake State Forest

Campground will remain closed for the next few weeks as storm cleanup in Houghton County continues.

Rich Pirhonen is the DNR ranger at Twin Lakes State Park.  He says officials hope to have enough debris cleared to reopen some sites, but others will remain closed until next spring.

A complex of thunderstorms with 90-mile-per-hour winds moved through the area in July, knocking down trees and producing flash floods.  Loggers have been working since then to remove safety hazards.  They’re also working to clean up about 15 acres around the boating access site and along Pike Lake Road.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
