DEQ proposes approval of Back Forty mine

LANSING, MI--   The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has proposed approving a mining permit for Aquila Resources for its Back Forty Project in Menominee County.

The project would focus on the extraction of gold, zinc, and copper.  It includes a processing facility in Lake Township.

The DEQ is seeking comments from the public on the proposed mining decision, as well as two other pending permit decisions:  an air emission and a surface water discharge permit.

A consolidated public hearing for all three permits will be held October 6 in Stephenson.  A fourth permit application for wetland impacts will be considered by the DEQ in a separate review process.

The public hearing takes place from 6 to 10 p.m. Central Time at Stephenson High School.

The DEQ will also accept written comments through November 3.
