U.P. diocese asks for Line 5 to be shut down

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Episcopal Diocese of Northern Michigan is calling on Governor Rick Snyder to shut down Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac unless the state can guarantee the oil pipeline’s safety.

In a November 12th resolution signed by Bishop Rayford J. Ray, the diocese said every human has the right to safe, clean water.  The resolution said the threat of a rupture in the 65-year-old pipeline and resulting damage to the environment are reasons the governor should shut off the flow of oil.

“This resolution sends a powerful message to the governor, who has the authority to act now to protect the Great Lakes from a catastrophic oil spill,” said Gary Street, who assisted in the drafting of the resolution.

The diocese represents the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
