State Parks & Rec Association gives awards for U.P. involvement

MARQUETTE, MI--   National Guard personnel and the president of a park friends group were recently

honored by the Michigan Recreation and Park Association for their community service efforts in the U.P.

Members of the 107th Engineer Battalion in Ishpeming were honored for helping to build a new playground at Van Riper State Park last June. More than half of the roughly 60 volunteers on the project came from the National Guard unit.

Also honored during an April 19 ceremony was Sally Berman, current President of the Friends of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Park Supervisor Jeff Gaertner says Berman is passionate about the park and its needs, and she donates time to several causes throughout the Ontonagon County area.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
