Comments sought on Grand Island fee schedule

MUNISING, MI--   The Hiawatha National Forest is seeking comment from the public about fee changes at the Grand Island National Recreation Area.

The proposal includes new fees for overnight camping and a $3 increase in the current fee for day use areas. The cost for an annual boat sticker would rise from $20 to $40 per boat.

Forest officials say visits to Grand Island increased from about 7,000 people in 2013 to nearly 11,500 in 2016. They say at the current visitation rate the new fees would increase revenue from about $19,000 to about $66,000 per year.

Comments will be accepted through September 6.

To submit a comment go to https://cara.ecosystem-management.org/Public/CommentInput?project=NP-1683, fill out a form available on Grand Island, or mail them to Munising Ranger District, 400 East Munising Avenue, Munising, Michigan, 49862.
