SAULT STE. MARIE, MI-- The Soo Locks are now open for business.
They opened Sunday, marking the beginning of the 2018 Great Lakes shipping season.
The locks in Sault Ste. Marie were officially closed on January 15. Crews performed repairs and maintenance during the ten-week-long winter shutdown. Work on the Poe lock operating system are completed. MacArthur lock work will continue through April.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the locks are a critical connection in the Great Lakes navigation system, and the Corps is dedicated to their reliability.
