Grant will help U.P. aquatic habitat

MARQUETTE, MI--   An Upper Peninsula project has received funding from the Department of Natural Resources. 

The DNR’s Aquatic Habitat Grant Program assists in protecting and restoring fish and water habitats. More than $362,000 has been slated for removal of the Manistique dam center flume wall.

The program is funded by revenues from fishing and hunting license fees.

Fourteen habitat restoration project totaling more than $2 million will be funded by the DNR this year. Nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and private citizens submitted a total of 41 applications requesting more than $7.7 million in funding to complete priority habitat projects in their areas.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
