Prescribed burns could take place this week

GLADSTONE, MI--   Officials with the Hiawatha and Ottawa National Forests say they’ll begin using prescribed burns to decrease debris in the coming weeks.

This week, Hiawatha personnel anticipate weather that will let them burn east of Trout Lake and also south of the Thunder Lake Road east of Straits Lake.

Whether or not the burns happen depends on favorable weather and site conditions, wind direction and speed, temperature, and fuel moisture.

Officials say prescribed fire makes forests more resilient, creates diverse habitats, and keeps the community safer from future wildfire by reducing hazardous fuel.
