Verso Escanaba mill settles with EGLE for fish kill incident

Michigan Department of Natural Resources

ESCANABA, MI— Verso Corporation has settled with the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy for a 2020 spill that killed fish in the Escanaba River.

Under the settlement, Verso will pay more than $244,451 in damages.

In August of 2020 an organic pollutant called “black liquor” was released from the wastewater treatment plant into the river, killing hundreds of fish downstream.

Because of National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System violations at the plant, Verso must also make spill prevention and containment improvements to its facilities to ensure protection of the Escanaba River and Lake Michigan.
