UPPCO to lower water levels at reservoirs

MARQUETTE, MI— Upper Peninsula Power Company is telling residents to be careful around its hydroelectric reservoirs, as the company begins lowering water levels.

UPPCO is preparing for melting snow and precipitation this spring. The Silver Lake, Hoist, Victoria Dam, Bond Falls and Lake Gogebic reservoirs will be lowered this month. Prickett Dam reservoir levels will be lowered in February.

The change in levels may create air gaps beneath the ice, making it unsafe. Increased water flow may also cause the ice to deteriorate further.

Normal water levels are expected to return in April.
