FEMA holding flood map open houses in 2 UP counties

STEPHENSON AND L'ANSE, MI— The Federal Emergency Management Agency is holding flood map information open houses in Menominee and Baraga counties this week.

It will allow residents to review preliminary versions of the recently completed Flood Insurance Study report and preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps. They provide base flood information, designate areas that are subject to significant flood hazards, and offer information public officials may use to guide development in the floodplain.

Once effective, the maps will be used as the basis for flood insurance ratings and local flood protection regulations.

The first open house will be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. Central at the Menominee County Annex in Stephenson. The second takes place Thursday at 6 p.m. Eastern at the L’Anse High School cafetorium.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
