Sediment causing flooding at Little Lake Harbor

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

LUCE COUNTY, MI— Luce County’s Little Lake Harbor is in critical need of dredging.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the harbor near Newberry is experiencing significant shoaling and shoreline flooding. Outflow from Little Lake is currently blocked by an accumulation of material in the federal channel.

Officials say, however, the number of maintenance projects throughout the country outpace available funds. The Corps was able to secure a small amount of funding to open up the outflow blockage and relieve the water level buildup this week.

Officials have requested emergency funding for a dredging contract to clear accumulated sediment from a larger portion of the federal navigation channel.
