LSWP awarded grant to decrease wildfire risk in communities

MARQUETTE, MI— The Lake Superior Watershed Partnership and Land Conservancy has received federal grants to help communities mitigate wildfire risk due to a changing climate.

The SWP and Great Lakes Climate Corps will use the $400,000 to assess fire risk, clear buffer space around community buildings and public infrastructure, and develop fire breaks by removing excess brush, trees, and woody debris.

Local units of government and tribes are invited to contact the SWP and submit potential fire mitigation sites for consideration. A link to the assistance request form is here.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
