MENOMINEE, MI— The M&M Area Community Foundation is looking for help in planting a rain garden at M&M Plaza in Menominee, following the completion of a project to control water runoff from the parking lot.
Currently, runoff is conveyed directly into the Menominee River through storm sewers and open ditches. Officials say after the garden is planted, around 1,800 pounds of sediment will be kept from entering the river each year.
Funding for the rain garden project is a result of grants awarded to the MMACF by The Fund for Lake Michigan and an agreement by the M&M Plaza owners to provide matching funds for additional environmental and aesthetic improvements.
Planting will start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, August 12. Those interested in volunteering must call the Foundation office at 906-864-3599.
