KNA ensures public access to Great Sand Bay beach

Keweenaw Natural Areas

KEWEENAW COUNTY, MI— The group Keweenaw Natural Areas has acquired 550 feet of Great Sand Bay shoreline, adding to the adjacent Michigan Nature Association Redwyn Dunes Preserve.

The price was $342,000. Ninety percent of the purchase price was donated by an anonymous KNA member. The remaining 10 percent must be raised over the next year.

The property has deeded access off M-26 and will be open to the public every day during daylight hours.

KNA was recently forced to sell Lot 24 of the Seven Mile Point subdivision due to restricted access on a private road. It was sold to another conservation organization, but the public guest access KNA negotiated over the private road on weekends in season was terminated with the sale.

More information about the sale is at www.keweenawnaturalareas.org.
