Grants awarded to help conserve Michigamme Highlands

UNDATED— Conservation of the Michigamme Highlands is being assisted by Walmart and the Life Time Foundation.

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation announced Thursday a $550,000 grant from the Walmart Acres for America program. Another $450,000 is coming from the Life Time Foundation, which aims to conserve forests and wildlife habitat and increase access to nature.

The grants to the Department of Natural Resources will support a $20 million effort to acquire a conservation easement of more than 73,000 acres of forest, lakes, trout streams, and wetlands in the Michigamme Highlands.
