Native plant garden installed in Big Bay

BIG BAY, MI— Work is underway to convert the Big Bay Pathway Trailhead into a Native Plant Garden and Outdoor Classroom.

Citizens for a Safe and Clean Lake Superior has partnered with Powell Township Parks and Recreation, Powell Township School, and other local groups to repopulate the area with native and pollinator-friendly plants.

The plants provide habitat and food for pollinators like butterflies, dragonflies, and bees. Native plants can also absorb up to 90 percent more water than non-native species, which controls flooding and runoff.

The public access garden will have benches and signage, and will be used by classes from local schools for nature-based learning.

The project was made possible through grants from the UP Environmental Coalition and Community Foundation of Marquette County.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
