Disposable vape drop-off site established in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI— A Marquette store has become a designated drop-off site for used vapes.

Kenny’s Corner Store at 246 West Hewitt has partnered with Citizens for a Safe and Clean Lake Superior in the effort.

The group says disposable nicotine vapes have become increasingly popular within the last few years, but they are harmful to the environment and difficult to recycle. When they become litter, the used vapes harm the environment and wildlife, and the lithium-ion battery can start fires when thrown away.

Kenny’s Corner Store now has a bucket for vapes. They’ll be stored outside overnight to mitigate any fire risk, and CSCLS will pick them up on a monthly basis. A certified recycler will then disassemble them into their components and recycle them.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
