OEJPA grants to benefit Upper Peninsula environmental projects

LANSING, MI— Two Upper Peninsula projects have received grants from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy to improve health and strengthen communities.

They were awarded through the Office of the Environmental Justice Public Advocate to reduce environmental burdens in Michigan communities with Environmental Justice concerns.

The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community will develop a tool allowing its Natural Resources Department to evaluate for changes to stream metals concentrations. The effort will focus on the Silver River and Slate River watersheds because they support traditional tribal hunting, gathering, and fishing activities near Huron Bay. Twenty-three metals will be quantified.

The Marquette County Planning Division intends to connect Little Trout Lake Park and the KI Sawyer Community Fitness Strip via the construction of a non-motorized trail along the Silver Lead Creek. The Silver Lead Creek Greenway will connect neighborhoods to recreation, work, school, and services via a non-motorized trail.
