Operation Taconite now in effect on Great Lakes

U.S. Coast Guard

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— The U.S. Coast Guard has begun to break ice on portions of the Great Lakes.

“Operation Taconite” is the Coast Guard’s largest domestic ice breaking operation. It encompasses Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, the Saint Marys River, the Straits of Mackinac, and Georgian Bay.

The Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw is assigned to western Lake Superior—specifically the twin ports of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin. Cutter Mobile Bay is assigned to manage the ice breaking needs of Green Bay, and cutters Katmai Bay and Neah Bay will manage the Saint Marys River and the Straits of Mackinac.
