Comment period on Line 5 tunnel cut in half

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

DETROIT, MI— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is moving quickly on a decision for the Line 5 tunnel project.

Due to an executive order calling for certain energy-related projects to be put on the fast track, the Corps announced in April it would speed up its review of the project.

The agency will release the draft environmental review on May 30. Under the new schedule, public comment will be received for only 30 days instead of the usual 60 days.

Line 5 carries oil and natural gas liquids more than 645 miles from Wisconsin to Ontario. A portion of it lies on the bed of the Straits of Mackinac.

Enbridge says moving Line 5 from the bed to underground will be safer. Environmentalists say the tunnel poses a danger to the Great Lakes and wildlife.

The Army Corps could decide on a federal permit for the tunnel this fall, months earlier than planned.
