ISHPEMING, MI— The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy has approved a permit for the Tilden Mine to fill wetland and stream areas with waste rock.
The permit allows for the permanent use of 32.5 acres of regulated wetland and 272 linear feet of regulated stream. That amounts to an additional 93 million long tons of rock stockpile capacity.
CCI must compensate for the impacts by preserving 114.9 acres of wetland in the Green Creek Preservation Area, by protecting streams and wetlands in the Goose Lake Inlet Conservation Area through a conservation easement, and by using 31.53 wetland credit acres in the Republic Wetland Preserve.
