Prescribed burns to take place in UP National Forests this spring through fall

MARQUETTE, MI— The Upper Peninsula Fire and Aviation Management Unit is planning prescribed fires in the Hiawatha and Ottawa National Forests this year.

Pending required approvals, the burns will take place this spring through fall, as weather conditions allow. Officials say the burns reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure, and natural resources from wildfires.

Prescribed fires are planned for 10,082 acres of the Hiawatha National Forest and 1,143 acres of the Ottawa National Forest. Those areas may close to the public for several days for safety and residents may see smoke during the burns.

County emergency management officials will be notified when burning begins. An online map is also available.
