Icebreaking to take place in Straits of Mackinac

MACKINAW CITY, MI— The U.S Coast Guard is set to open the south channel in the Straits of Mackinac on Sunday.

Located north of Cheboygan and south of Bois Blanc Island, the channel serves a commercial shipping lane.

Sector Northern Great Lakes urges the public who recreate on the ice to plan their activities carefully, use caution on the ice, and stay away from charted shipping channels.

Officials say the activity weakens ice far beyond the tracks created by icebreaking ships.
