Sault Tribe deals with oil spill near Cedarville

oil spill

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI— The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians says it has largely contained an oil spill at the McKay Bay boat launch.

The Natural Resources Division was notified around 5:45 p.m. Thursday of the spill east of Cedarville. Staff immediately contacted local and tribal law enforcement and began coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard. Oil booms were deployed to prevent the spill from migrating to sensitive coastal wetlands.

The tribe continues to investigate the cause and the full extent of the spill.

The boat launch is temporarily closed and the public is asked to stay away from the area.
